Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Financial literacy is an essential skill that enables individuals to make informed and effective decisions with their financial resources. Nollywood, as a leading film industry in Nigeria, has the potential to promote financial education by incorporating themes related to money management, saving, investing, and entrepreneurship in its films. In Wukari Local Government Area of Taraba State, where youth unemployment and financial insecurity are prevalent, the role of Nollywood in promoting financial literacy can be an important tool for social change (Aliyu & Okereke, 2023).
This study will explore how Nollywood films can serve as a medium for financial literacy education and the impact of these films on the financial behavior of youths in Wukari.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Financial illiteracy among youths in Wukari is contributing to poor financial decisions, debt, and a lack of savings. While some Nollywood films focus on financial themes, it is unclear how effectively they educate youths in rural areas about managing money. This study will assess whether Nollywood films can bridge the gap in financial literacy and empower youths to make better financial choices.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
- To evaluate the portrayal of financial literacy in Nollywood films.

- What changes in financial behavior can be attributed to watching Nollywood films among youths in Wukari?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
- Nollywood films have a positive influence on the financial literacy of youths in Wukari Local Government Area.
- Exposure to Nollywood films is correlated with improved financial decision-making and behavior among youths in Wukari.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will contribute to the understanding of how media, specifically Nollywood films, can be used to promote financial literacy. The findings will be relevant to filmmakers, educators, and policymakers working to integrate financial education into youth media.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the impact of Nollywood films on financial literacy among youths in Wukari. A limitation is the potential for other influences on financial behavior, such as family background and formal education, which may complicate the analysis.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
- Nollywood Films: Nigerian films, primarily produced in English, covering various genres and often addressing social issues.
- Financial Literacy: The knowledge and skills needed to manage financial resources effectively, including budgeting, saving, investing, and debt management.
- Youths: Individuals typically aged between 15 and 30 years, who are navigating key financial decisions as they transition to adulthood.
